Our Mission
The Sharpstown Parks Alliance (SPA) is a 501(c)3 volunteer-based organization whose mission is to promote, strengthen and support neighborhood parks and green spaces by working with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, the Houston Parks Board, Harris County Precinct 4, and other partners in providing educational and recreational opportunities within the Sharpstown area.
Our focus is on the six neighborhood parks in the area including Bayland, Bonham, Crain, Lansdale, Sharpstown and Sharpstown Green parks.
About the Alliance
● The Sharpstown Parks Alliance (SPA) is a 501(c)3 volunteer-based organization whose mission is to promote, strengthen and support neighborhood parks and green spaces by working with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, the Houston Parks Board, Harris County Precinct 4, and other partners in providing educational and recreational opportunities throughout the Sharpstown area.
● Monthly meetings are held on the third Monday from 6 to 7 pm via Zoom.
● The annual meeting is held yearly in May.
Focus of Activities
● Our primary focus is on five neighborhood parks - Bonham, Crane, Lansdale/Pickard, Sharpstown, and Sharpstown Green.
● We also support Bayland Park, Sharpstown Trail and other green space initiatives.
● The alliance has developed a series of programs and projects designed to draw residents to the parks, and to help make their visit enjoyable and educational.
Programs
● Sharpstown Plant Swap – held annually in April at the Lansdale Park Pavilion. Green-thumbed gardeners gather to swap plants and growing tips.
● Tree and Bird Identification – check the kiosk to see the list of trees and birds to be found at Monsignor Pickard Park..
Projects – Past, Present and Future
● Sharpstown Young Gardeners Alliance (SHS) – working with the school to educate, enthuse and provide hands-on experience with growing plants and maintaining gardens on the campus. Students are encouraged to participate in our programs.
● Logo Competition – Sharpstown International School (SIS) and Sharpstown High School (SHS) art students were given the opportunity to submit logo designs for the alliance. SIS student Ingrid Gonzalez won the competition.
