Sharpstown Park

From City Councilman Mike Laster...

You may have noticed the piles of dirt in Sharpstown Park lately. Construction is underway for the new family style swimming pool and related improvements to the park. The older olympic-sized pool located in front of the golf course has been deteriorating for some time now. So, its time for a new pool and amenities!

These new park improvements at a cost of over $2,700,000 are being funded by the Sharpstown Tax Increment Re-Investment Zone (TIRZ) and the Houston Parks Department. The Sharpstown TIRZ contributed $2 million dollars for this important project. You may recall that the Sharpstown TIRZ also contributed a total of $1 million dollars toward construction of the walking trail and front gate improvements to Crain Park and the new water splash pad in Lansdale Park. I am grateful that the Sharpstown TIRZ has continued its investment in these much needed quality of life improvement to this part of District J.

Once completed the new pool and other amenities will re-focus community attention, access and use of the park property to the eastern side of Harbor Town Drive. It is that property that actually bears the name “Sharpstown Park”. The multi-purpose center, old pool and pro-shop on the western side are part of the Golf Course complex. Upon excavation of the old pool, the area known as “the front of the house” of the Golf Course will be opened and available to much needed expansion and improvements. Sharpstown Golf course — a jewel in and of itself – is one of the City’s most actively played public golf courses. It certainly is a major asset to District J!

These park construction projects are a continuation of your District J office’s on-going efforts to focus on park improvements across the District. Look for a new pavilion in Lansdale Park, renovations to Rasmus Park, upgrades to Burnett Bayland Park and ongoing improvements to the Lee LeClear Tennis Center. Our parks advocacy communities such as the Sharpstown Parks Alliance, the Friends of the Sharpstown Golf Course, the Friends of the Lee LeClear Tennis Center, Las Madres del Parque (the Mothers of the Park) at Burnett Bayland and our new support group for Rasmus Park are providing strong voices of advocacy for these important public amenities.

I hope to see you in one of our parks soon.

Thank You,
Council Member Mike Laster
